August 2014: Shadows

August 2, 2014
Saturday
Visual Sanctuary Meeting
3:30-5:30 pm
Room 208 Vineyard Community Center

The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.

Hebrews 10:1

What is a shadow?

It is the absence of light.

On a sunny day a shadow on the ground won't be pitch black, but dark transparent. It is in the shape of the object from which the sun casts light on from the opposite side.

Don't we get caught looking at our dark side?

God created us, but since Adam sinned we have fallen natures. Therefore, we need laws to sustain us.

But the "Law" that Hebrews 10 is talking about is the law that Moses brought to the Jews from God to create a culture that represented and prepared the way for Jesus to come and establish His kingdom. All of Jesus's kingdom is good and comes from God. It is a restoration of the world as it was during the time of Adam and Eve before they rebelled against God.

God challenges our imaginations. We must think about what it is like to live in a world that has no corruption, deceit, or accusation. A world that exists to glorify Him and is whole, not deteorating away.

What are some good things that you would like to see happen in your lifetime?

What do you know about God's goodness?

If you could create art about the world as you believe it should be, what would it look like?

Remember that God uses pictorial descriptions in the Bible to show us how he works and what he desires for us. Read some passages and ask God to explain them for you, chances are He will relate to you in memories.

Join Visual Sanctuary for a monthly meeting as we build a place of rest for ourselves, our church, and the world. This is a potluck. Please bring a dish to share. We will share our art and our calling, discuss Biblical truths, pray, and have open studio time.  Each month we will pursue and implement a new aspect of rest with a worksheet.  We will have periodic visiting artists from a variety of disciplines for discussion of these topics.  All are welcome.

Please visit www.VisualSanctuary.org or contact Alex Ferree by email at visualsanctuarynews@gmail.com.

We meet 3:30-5:30 pm the First Saturday of every month in Room 208 in the Vineyard Columbus Community Center 6000 Cooper Rd. Westerville, OH 43081.

Encounter Night
7 pm
Vineyard Columbus

At Vineyard Columbus we are empowered evangelicals, which means that we want to make room in our lives for the Holy Spirit. Encounter is an opportunity to engage the Holy Spirit through worship, the arts and spiritual gifts. Encounter His presence and experience His power. No childcare is provided.

We will be continuing on the theme of Struggle. I will be starting an art piece in oil pastel that will span 2-3 months of this series.
